Our Story
The Urban Scholastic Center (USC) was founded to help close opportunity gaps for students in Wyandotte County through extended education opportunities laced with a strong faith foundation.

A key part of USC’s mission is to “build leaders from here for here through Jesus and education.” Abiding by that mission, USC’s student-focused and faith-centered programs have been transforming the community for the last 15 years. Since 2004, USC has grown and evolved, positively impacting the physical and spiritual lives of hundreds of elementary through high-school-aged students.

Rooted in USC’s core values of Jesus and education, each of the programs features a foundational curriculum of faith and literacy. For example, the Soul Food Program provides students with a well-balanced meal, worship, and classroom instruction on biblical topics. The Life Enrichment Program encourages students to grow holistically with daily lessons in computer science, robotics, entrepreneurship, the Bible, and community service. In the Beautiful Feet Program, students from local high schools come to the USC to share a nutritious meal, worship, and Bible study. From music, art, and literacy programs to field trips and summer camps, USC acts as both a safe haven and an empowering platform for students who otherwise wouldn’t have those types of opportunities. These are just a few examples of how USC strives to elevate and empower students today and in the future.

Developing the next generation of Christian leaders is a multi-faceted process that USC accomplishes through discipleship, character development, and education. The staff at the center is made up of a diverse team of professionals and volunteers who lead with passion and a desire to help students become who God created them to be. They exemplify vibrant faith and strong relationships, which is integral to the mission of the USC, as these values and role models are not always available to every student.
Meet BJ
BJ has been going to USC since he was in kindergarten. After graduating from high school, he wants to go to college for architecture. When asked what the USC does, he answered: “It helps kids grow and find themselves… It is so hard to explain because literally, USC has done everything for me. Anytime I had a need, USC provided it for me.”

While the USC is dedicated to transforming lives here on earth, they are constantly pointing kids back to the Gospel which has the power to transform lives forever. With faith-centered programs, students involved with the center discover a loving network of structure, support, and safety that shapes the trajectory of their life. These children have infinite potential, and the USC is honored to be a part of each student’s unique story. After a decade and a half of elevating the community, the USC is determined to continue its mission far into the future.
